What to Do After a Slip-and-Fall Accident
You've fallen on another person's property and injured yourself. It could be slipping on something in a store, tripping on a crumbling staircase or falling on an icy sidewalk. Now what do you do?
Try to remain calm. This may be easier said than done, but it is important to remember as much as you can about the accident. Here are some common sense things to do in the after an accident, depending on the severity of your injuries:
• Get medical attention. The most important thing is your health. If you need immediate medical assistance, make sure that you or someone in the area calls 911. The most important thing after you are injured is to make sure you treat your injuries immediately and properly. If you cannot get medical attention at the scene, be sure to visit a doctor as soon as you can to make sure you receive proper treatment and properly document your injuries.
• Report your accident. You should let the property owner know that the slip-and-fall accident occurred. If your accident occurred in a store, alert the store manager about what happened. Depending on the store, they may create an incident report. Sometimes, contacting the police may be appropriate.
• Take pictures. If you are able, use your cell phone or smartphone to take pictures of the accident site. Photos of the conditions immediately after your accident may be helpful in making your case against the property owner.
• Take notes. As soon as you able, write down everything you remember about the accident. Note what happened before and after the accident, the weather conditions, interior conditions and what the accident site looked like. Write down any contact information for witnesses and property owners.
Once the dust has settled, you may want to contact a New York slip and fall attorney to help you deal with the aftermath, such as dealing with the insurance company or possibly filing a personal injury lawsuit.
